LANDED..........
Planned Feb 2016
I will be moving from India to Canada in Feb 2016.

Need tips for mobile phone usage - does Indian handset (GSM/micro-sim) work in Canada? or

will I have to purchase new handset after landing?

How much time does it take to get a new cellphone connection working after we land?

I have checked my carrier's international roaming charges but they are too much,
but is it advisable to use international roaming of my own phone from my country if it's going to take considerable time for a new cell in canada?

I don't want to remain without a mobile in my hand for much time, you know.

Your phone will need to be network unlocked to use a local SIM card, otherwise you will need to buy a new handset.
I believe you will need Canadian ID and bank account for a pay monthly plan but you can buy a pre paid plan without these.
You should do some research into this as I have found Canada to be expensive when it comes to mobile phone, TV and Internet plans compared to most countries so compare all options.

Hope that helps.

check out wind mobile, you can get a good deal sim only pre paid x

NO.

A few minutes in a store or a mall.

Get the roaming ON so that u can continue to receive SMSes. However do not use it to make or receive calls.

No one wants to. You are not an exception.
