Hi I am in the process of sponsoring my wife and dependent child from Colombia to Canada where I reside. I have downloaded Guide 3900 Sponsorship of a Spouse, Common law partner and dependent child living outside Canada. I have completed numerous pdf paperwork for the sponsorship but I seem to be stuck on the criminal check background. It is saying do not apply for the criminal check until recieving a file number from the visa office. Is my wife supposed to go to the Canadian Embassy in Bogota to recieve this file number from the visa office? Or do I recieve this file number after my sponsorship approval has been accepted in the CIC office in Mississauga Canada. Basically, am I completing all the paperwork to fast or I am supposed to wait after step 1 of the Guide to say If i get approval for sponsorship..

Thanks.

Once the application reaches the processing visa office. They will then send instructions to your spouse to obtain the Police Certificate. From CIC

How or where do I obtain one?

If you live in Colombia (both nationals and non-nationals)
Once you have submitted an application to the visa office, the visa office processing your case will provide instructions to you on how to obtain the background verifications certificate.

Thank you PMM for your response. Basically I am supposed to complete all the required documentation, send it to CIC in Mississauga which is close to where I live at the present moment, they will approve the sponsorship application and then forward it to the VISA office in Bogota which will provide me a file number and then they will instruct me on how to proceed with the background verification check for my wife who currently resides and lives in Colombia. Is that the correct process that will occur? Thank you again for your response.

Yes, but it sounds like the visa office will send the instructions to your wife, not you.

Thanks again everybody for your replys. I just had my wife do the medical tests with the specified doctor in Medellin and I was billed 600,000 pesos or around 350 dollars canadian. Was that the average cost you all paid for the tests? I think that's a little steep considering they were only blood tests, xrays and a few other minor things...Thanks.

Mine was more expensive.. You got a good deal! (UK).

My husband's was around that, in a country where going to the doctor and getting treated/medicine would usually cost about $25. The price varies a lot, but is always high for what you get.
