Hello,

My boyfriend and I need some advice. I'm Canadian and met my American boyfriend online last year. He's visited me in Ottawa twice and I have visited him once. NOW... he wants to move here and we want to know what are options are because we want him to be able to work when he gets here. We're not afraid of the marriage route at all, however, it's not something that I want to rush into just yet. I have that dream wedding in mind that I want to save money for! haha.

Anyways, how can he continue to earn money while making his move here sooner than later. My concern with the TWP is that if for whatever reason it's not renewed, he has to return home to the States.

Hopefully that makes sense :)

Thanks, in advance.

Welcome to the forum! Seems to me that you are already aware of your options. IF he can get a TWP, that's a VERY GOOD start. Aside from the obvious (loosely termed) options, my "outside-of-the-box" idea - can you move to Niagara Falls, AND he move to Buffalo, NY? I know, I know that is "out there" and you may very well have a career that prevents that, but anyway.

Thanks for your reply :)

Last resort, he'd move to Ogdensburg NY which is about 1hour away from where I am. There wouldn't be anything going for me in Niagara Falls. So if he were to get a TWP and a job here, would that affect his future PR application? The fact that the real reason why he's coming here is for me? So when they eventually review our file in like 2014 (which is when we would like to get married) would that look as though he's being dishonest or something?

No, not at all. In fact the longer your relationship before marriage the better, for the sake of a sponsorship application and for PR. Now, I don't know if obtaining a TWP for an American is any easier than for others but as far as I'm concerned that's a real PITA!

you might want to have a look at NAFTA as well - search the forum with that word and you'll get a full explanation. Basically it's a work permit that you can get at the border directly - only applies for certain categories ( and only for US citizen I think), but your partner might be in them.
good luck!
