Im a little confused re OWP and PR.\

Does PR, by its nature, allow me to work without needing a permit? (ie as soon as I get the PR card in my grubby little fist I can then go out working?)

OR

Do I need to apply for an OWP with my PR application?

Did you apply Inland or Outland?

Permanent residency allows you to work legally in canada.

All this talk about OWPs sent in with the application are for people who are applying inland.

If you're applying outland you have to wait until you get your COPR, then you can apply for a Social Insurance Number, which will allow you to work legally in Canada.
