Hi. I am a Canadian citizen and 2 and half years ago sponsored my spouse who lives in Afghanistan. Just last few weeks she got her visa and our application to sponsor her and permanent residence was approved. She is due to arrive in Canada May 19. We are planning on travel to Cuba or on a cruise around June 7.

My question is: would she need a visa to travel on a cruise with me or any kind of travel documents or passport. Can she travel at all after arriving?? .

Any advice and authentic information is appreciated. Thank you

When she travels to other countries, her travel requirements will still be evaluated by the passport she holds. For example, if she holds a passport from Afghanistan and needs a visa to enter Cuba now - she will still need a visa to enter Cuba after she becomes a Canadian PR.

Returning to Canada is something you also have to plan out. Normally she would return using her PR card. However it takes several weeks to issue her PR card and it won't be ready before you leave. This means that she will need to apply for a Travel Document to return to Canada (an airline won't let her board without one). She cannot apply for a Travel Document in advance - she must apply through the local consulate/embassy once she has left Canada. I believe it can take several weeks for the TD to be issued. To avoid complications on this front, I would advise you to wait until she has her PR cards (I believe it's taking around 8-9 weeks right now?) before she leaves Canada on such a short trip.
