Hi guys, I want to apply for a college in Niagara Falls as an international student. (I am a US citizen and I heard that I don't need a visa since I just need to have my passport, although, I'm not sure how that works in terms of getting a multiple entry visa or having a long term stay.) I'm not sure if that's the best choice for me. I want to start attending by January 2020 (assuming that I have enough money by the last few months of 2019 to pay for the tuition as well as showing proof that I have enough money to support my own living too).

However, I'm not sure if that's the best thing to do. I primarily want to go to Canada to live with my girlfriend who's also going to become an international student soon. Both of us currently live in different countries and really wish to live together there. I thought that being a student is the fastest/most convenient way to do it. However, I still need to have enough money to qualify.

Is there another option I have that allows me to be in canada within the next 9 months? My goal is to be in Canada during the beginning of January 2020. I'd like to get a job offer instead, but I heard that finding a job in Canada while being in another country is tough. (I also won't have a year's worth of work experience or more by then.)

Please help if you can, I really appreciate it.

Hi

You don't need a visa but you do need a study permit. As an American, you can apply for a study permit at a POE. You will need to be able to show around $25,000 in funds.

Unless you can get a job offer under NAFTA, you have little chance of obtaining a work permit. Your other option is to enter as a visitor but that will not allow you to live in Canada long-term.

No one can say if coming as a student is the best option for you. Personal decision.

Thanks for your quick reply! For clarification, when you say I need to show around $25,000 in funds, do you mean in CAD? (Sorry, the $ sign is the same as USD's which confuses me at times.) Also, is the around $25,000 the total cost if you include the tuition as well?

Finding a job is not only tough per se , when you are a foreigner you also have to hold the legal right to obtain one.
