Hello Kunal,
Good that you will be moving to Canada in Jan 2011, wish you all the best!
Answering your question:
Please note that there are 3 different modes by which you can export your goods.
1) Courier Mode
2) Air Cargo Mode
3) Sea Cargo Mode
The courier mode have its pros n cons as it will be more expansive compared to 2 other modes, other side it will be less hassle in paper works etc..
The Air Cargo mode shipment will be cheaper compared to Courier mode. Well, in Air cargo you can consolidate (combine) two shipments in to one and can export under one Airway Bill (MAWB: Master Airway Bill). You may ask your Indian people to export it to Dubai (DXB), and from DXB you may consol two shipments in to one and export to Canada under one AWB.
In Airway Bill (MAWB) you have to show shipper (sender) and consignee (Receiver), both addresses should be Name.. Full postal address with Zip/Pin code and must not with Post Box No. Hence make sure that you must have a valid postal address of Canada, or else you shipment will classified as “Unknown Cargo” and will be in custody of Customs, you may face lot of problems later on while filing delivery request and customs people may screw you like hell.
Sea Cargo mode (LCL shipment: Less than Container Load) is much cheaper then above both, it may cost you USD 25 per CBM (cubic meter) from DEL to DXB and from DXB to Canada it will cost you approx USD 50 to 60 per CBM. Transit period: DEL-DXB : 8 to 9 days via Nhava Sheva (JNPT) port of Mumbai & DXB-Toronto : 18 to 20 days
1 CBM = 1 meter in length x 1 meter width x 1 meter height
Air cargo shipment formula: Gross weight or volume weight which ever is higher, airline will consider it as chargeable weight.
Air cargo shipment weight formula: L x W x H
(if cms) divide it to 6000 = Answer is volume weight
OR
Air cargo shipment weight formula: L x W x H
(if inches) divide it to 366 = Answer is volume weight
Both in above Air & Sea cargo mode you will be required to furnish following documents:
1) Invoice copy 7 copies (showing value of goods to minimal saying 2nd hand goods exported as for migration purpose) lets say USD 300 or so..
2) Packing list – 7 copies – mentioning LWH, weight, volume etc.. (no need to show value of goods in packing list)
3) Self declaration – mentioning purpose of exports etc...
4) Passport photo copy
5) visa stamp photo copy.
6) Your Air ticket photo copy.
