Lors de mon inscription, j'ai reçu un message concernant mon passeport. En effet, mon premier passeport était expiré et j'ai obtenu un laissez-passer pour entrer au Maroc, où je l'ai ensuite renouvelé. On m'a demandé de fournir une explication pour la période pendant laquelle je n'avais pas de passeport valide.

I suppose you thought you didn't need to renew the passport because you didn't expect to travel but then there was an emergency or somethibg unexpected and you got that laissez-passer.
Just say that. It doesn't need to be a complicated or long reason. After all having a valid passport isn't a citizenship application requirement.
