I am writing this on behalf of a close friend that has been recently admitted to the immigration detention centre in Mississauga.

Long story short, he has over started his welcome here by a few years and was pulled over by the police the other night and they arrested him and told him there was an immigration warrant out for him.
The warrant wasn't a supprise, but the arrest was.

He were getting reference letters together which was the advice of a lawyer he went to see for some free advice. The plan was to hopefully see what could be done about him not being deported, but I don't think anything can stop that at this point.

Once he's back home, what does he need to do to get back here in Canada? What can I do as a Canadian citizen to help him out?

Thanks in advance!

Why is the arrest a surprise? Am I missing something here?

Bad choice of words. The arrest wasn't a surprise, being pulled over was.
Any advice on what I can do going forward to help him regain entry into the country at a later date?
I'm very new to any immigration laws. I've never had to deal with any of this before.

After he's deported he'll be banned from Canada for some time (I think between 1 - 5 years). There is no chance for him to return to Canada while the ban is in force.

After the ban is over, he can try his luck to return again as a visitor but there's a good chance his TRV would be refused. Also a good chance a study visa would be refused if he tried that route. Or if he can qualify under any immigration streams he can try that as well.

Not really anything you can do to help him, except write an invitation and support letter when he tries to return again (though may not amount to much).

Also check out which condition applies, a deportation order looks like the most serious and the one where reentry might be a challenge http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/inadmissibility/arc.asp As previous post will depend what term the deportation order says as far as exclusion from Canada and then will need to go through the authority to return process. However having overstayed for years the chances of returning might be slim but who knows.

He has pretty much no chance of coming back to Canada as a temporary resident (visitor, student or worker). He has already shown a blatant disregard for the law and is a very high overstay risk.

What is your relationship with this person? Are they just a friend or more than a friend?

Were just buddies. We met quite a few years back.

In that case there's really no way you can help your friend return. He'll have to return on his own. Once he's deported, he'll need an ARC to return. That in itself is a long process (count on 8 months) with no guarantee of approval. Even if the ARC is approved, assuming your friend is from a non-visa exempt country, the chances of any temporary permit being approved would now be close to nil. So once he's removed, likely the only realistic option for returning would be to get an ARC approved and then apply to immigration (if he qualifies).
