You need a way to prove that you can provide for yourself and the person you are sponsoring. If you have dependants, it makes it harder, but if it is just you and your spouse, I believe you can provide a statement of account that shows you can take care of you both. We're living in a time where a lot of people have lost their jobs, so it wouldn't be a negative factor -- and I know someone directly whose sponsor was a student, and wasn't working, but these things tend to be different from person to person.
