I'd like to add a family name after my current last name. My current last name will then become my middle name. E.g. I'd like to go from Bob Lee to Bob Lee Smith.

My oath ceremony is on March 16. I have an international business trip on March 28 that I can't move.

Option A:
  • Apply for my new Canadian passport urgently (hopefully on March 16 itself if my name is in the database, if not, on March 19...and pray I get my new passport in time for my flight).
  • Then, after my trip, apply for a name change.
  • Apply for a new citizenship certificate after I receive the name change certificate.
  • Then apply for another new passport with my new name, with the new citizenship certificate as a supporting document.
Option B:
Alternatively, does it make sense to hold off on applying for a new Canadian passport? In other words
  • Apply for a name change first
  • Wait several weeks (or few months?) to get the name change certificate
  • Apply for new citizenship certificate with updated name (needs name change certificate as supporting document)
  • Apply for the Canadian passport with new citizenship certificate
If I go with Option B, can I still travel with my current (Indian) passport until I receive a new Canadian passport (could be another 3-4 months, right?). I think I will automatically cease to be an Indian citizen once I obtain Canadian citizenship, so I'm not even sure Option B is possible/legal.

You can use Indian passport for upto 90 days (check BLS site). But you will not be able to enter canada, as you won't have your PR Card.

As far as name change, I am sorry - I dont have an answer to that question. I also want to add my married name to the canadian passport first if I can (didn't want to change my indian passport right now).

You may be stuck going route A.

Canadian citizens must use a Canadian passport when traveling to Canada, so you will need to have a Canadian passport by the time you leave for your business trip.
(You can ask for urgent processing, for which a fee is owed, when you apply for your passport, so you should have the passport on time)
