Hello everyone,

1. This question might have been asked before, but I am looking for someone who has gone through this and can advise me.

We got married in February, 2013. I was thinking to change my last name after we got married, but it would have been too much trouble with all the documents and waiting time. Therefore, we decided to send the application with my maiden name and wait at least until Sponsorship Approval. We sent the application on June 14th, and got SA on July 15th - and the application was sent to Los Angeles. My passport expired yesterday. Is this a good time to change my name to my husband's last name? If I do, how do I inform them? Will it affect the application? Should I just wait until the process is complete and until then renew my passport with my maiden name? Also, I will get a new job in about a month, so I was thinking to start with the new name. Any thoughts? (Sorry for so many questions)

2. How come some applications (American-Canadian) are forwarded to Ottawa and some to Los Angeles (or any other VO). Do they have a way of choosing? Does it matter which VO is?

Thank you so much for your future replies.

Thaliada

I would just go ahead and change everything, then get copies of it all and send them to the VO. Even if you renew the passport in your maiden name you will get a new number (I think?) so it would still have to be updated with the VO.

I am the sponsor so it is a little different, but I had my passport in my maiden name(sent in for proof of visas/visits to my husband) and my other documents in my married name. I was worried about it being confusing for them. I am sure they have seen all sorts of things though. I did include a brief explanation as to why the names did not match.

My point is that we worry more then we need too. Change your documents to your married name, send everything in once you get it back. And as a side bonus, it might show more commitment to your husband/marriage that you are taking his name (not that everyone does that these days).

Take Care

Thank you!

I will change my name then :) Can't wait!

For 2, I've tried to figure that out, I honestly have no idea and I don't think anyone else does either (I've asked). It doesn't really matter when it comes to your file. It doesn't mean you need an interview, because we didn't so I don't think it's that.

Thank you Parker.

This is what it says in the letter I received:

"The visa office was selected based on your relative's home address and the requirements of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act". He is from Alabama, but he has an implied status and he's with me in Canada. However, when I was completing the application, I didn't know what address to write after his visa would expire (July 7th) so I wrote his mother's address from Alabama, so I wouldn't raise suspicion that he moved in with me and he won't go. This whole process seems so complicated...

Anyway, I am hoping for the best.

My husband is from TN and has family in Alabama! :) I tried to figure it out by asking where everyone was from who went through LA, but there was everything. CA, NY, TX etc etc

It must be the fact that I wrote the address from July 7th onwards as Alabama address...

That's nice that your husband has relatives in Alabama :)

Now that I think about it... maybe I should let them know that he is still here... although I did not receive any news about his visitor status (even if we sent the request 2 months ago)

They won't care lol. My husband was here as well, and we were waiting for visitor's extension as well when he got his PPR. They knew he was here as the one we waited for before getting PPR was his third. So they know he's there, but if they send it to LA, they will.

I see. Then I will stop worrying and wait patiently (if I can :))

I totally understand! The waiting is the WORST part! And they lack communication :P
