He cannot sponsor you for study permit but he can be your financial sponsor mean he will pay for your school fees and whatnot but that doesn't mean you will get approved. You will also need to show home ties as well to prove that you won't overstay once you graduate.

It's typically quite difficult to be approved when your financial sponsor is a friend. It's much better if you either have the money yourself or you are being sponsored by an immediate family member (like your father).
