It's been a little bit rough for us lately. My husband is redundant again and this has led to depression. The distance doesn't help and after a recent scare, I made up my mind that I'm moving to be with my husband and son because I know that us being together will make a big difference. I know it seems like it's only been 7 months, but we've been together for four+ years and most of that time have been mostly apart so application aside it's time for us to be together.

Anyways, I told my boss and she said that we can look into ways for me to have an income while away and will discuss today. I know that there are some portfolios that I could do remotely, while there are others, like for example I travel across Canada doing presentations; of course I cannot do those abroad. So, I assume that I am going to be contractual, lose my benefits and full-time permanent status and there will be a drop in monthly pay. I'm assuming that I need to contact my VO? Is there anything else that I should consider before I have this conversation with my boss and what should I say when I contact my VO. I would probably leave within 30-45 days.

Also, what should I ask of my employer to write to CIC? I know that she cannot gaurentee me a permanent job upon my return so would it be sufficient to ask her to say something like she would strongly consider re-hiring me full-time permanent upon my return?

I think a simple, short letter outlining what your new responsibilities and pay would suffice. She could say that you're a strong contender for a more full time job when you return. That shouldn't be a problem because you don't have to have a job lined up, just have a way to support your family and have skills that make you employable, which you clearly have.

Are you a Canadian citizen? Or a PR? If you're a PR then you won't be able to go to your husband's country for more than 2 weeks, but if you're a citizen it won't be a problem.

Hi thanks for the feedback; that helps as I want to keep our application going while abroad. I'm a Canadian citizen by birth. We had a brief chat yesterday and have a meeting tomorrow to discuss options. I will ask her if she could write that letter; she wrote a great letter for the sponsorship application.

I'm excited; it will be a relief to NEVER have to count down the days to the end of visits.

Meeting went better than expected. There seems to be a number of projects that could be done remotely. She suggested that for the short-term I can reduce my hours to part-time (21 hours) and retain my benefits, including employer contribution to pension. If immigration comes through or looks like it's about to come through in approx 6 months than I can come back to my job upon return to Canada. If the immigration application runs longer than 6 months, we can look into invoicing for work incurred and give up the position.

That's great! I don't think it should be a problem at all. Having the job to come back to will look good for being about the financially provide for your family, as well as returning to Canada when your husband gets his PR.
