Moving stuff from USA to Canada

HI All,

I completed my landing procedure earlier this year and now I am planning to move to Canada permanently. I am planning to drive UHaul to move my stuffs. I bought few items (mostly furniture) after I completed my landing procedure and they are not listed in GTF form. Can I still move these items without paying duty?

Technically you're supposed to pay duty on anything not listed. Practically, you're probably not going to have an issue unless the officer decides to be extremely thorough. They don't usually cross-check every last thing on the list.

When I moved, I had a list with around a hundred items. They didn't go into the truck and double check.

All depends on your definition of "few", the officers mood, and your general demeanor. If your list has 5 items on it but you show up with a stuffed U-Haul... well then you may have an issue.

Thanks for the response! I can understand but I feel the procedure is a little weird. If a person is moving to Canada permanently after 10-12 months of completing the landing procedure, how can the person have the full list of goods that he wants to import?

Why not? You're not really supposed to buy tons of new stuff just because it's cheaper in the states. Come to Canada and buy stuff, or else pay the customs duty like everyone else.

And like I said, they don't really enforce it in a strict manner, they do understand that people will buy some things, and they aren't trying to be nasty to you. As long as you're reasonable and don't show up with a truck full of stuff and a goods to follow list with three things on it, you'll be fine.
