I'm a US citizen with a valid passport. I've read that I don't need a visitor visa due to this but might need to apply for a visitor record to stay longer than 6 months? I'm not really sure.
I plan on applying for Inland Spousal Sponsorship after moving (which will be in May/June), but the processing time is where I have concerns.

Post to the family section of the forum.

You should only move personal belongings after you have PR.

Why not submit an Outland application now? You can still come to Canada as a visitor in May/June to `visit' while awaiting your PR approval. You can even work remotely for a person or company that is outside of Canada without needing a work permit.

This is because I've read I need an Open Work Permit for my dependent child to qualify to go to public school prior to us getting approved for PR. I intend to maintain my current role at my current company and don't actually need the work permit for myself.

Outland applicants who arrive in Canada can now apply for open work permits once they arrive in Canada.

Yuuup, I just saw the update to the canada.ca website. I'll be getting to work on the outland then!

The timing of the OWP is quite uncertain in either case. Frankly if you apply soonest for the spousal sponsorship, I think chances are pretty good you'll have the PR approved before you'd get the PR. (Tming for security and criminal clearances etc generally quick for US citizens)
