Hello.

I am mexican and I am actually living (as a tourist) with my fiance in Edmonton. We met on internet and we almost have 2 years of relationship. During that time, I was studying in Mexico and I was coming to Canada on vacations (summer, winter 2017 and summer 2018) In winter 2018 he went to Mexico to my graduation party, he proposed. Now that I finished the university, I came to stay the maximum time allowed for a visitor and also preparing to get married.

I arrived 3 months ago and I have a returning ticket to my country for September, but as I said, we wanted to to marry during this time. I have a few concerns and questions about this because we are really afraid on doing wrong movements and stay away for years and more because we are in the middle of the time I have permission to stay legally.

1. How long does it takes to get the marriage licence? Because I've read in other pages it can take 2-3 months.

2. If, for example, we get marry around the end of July/first weeks of August, what can I do with the time I am allowed to stay as a tourist? Can we extend the months and apply asap for sponsorship? Do I need to go back because I've read also that if I leave Canada once married I can not get back. How is this working?

3. If we have just a civil wedding, without party, is it affecting the process?

4. My fiance has debts with some credit cards, it is not a big deal, he is not in bankruptcy but, can it make the sponsorship fail?

5. What are the requirements for a Open Work Visa? I've read that once I get marry and we start the sponsorship, I can also apply for an OWV.

6. What is it the best way to approach my sponsorship without failing due to our situation?

Thank you so much for your time!

Thank you so much for your time!

1. You can generally get the licence on the spot. The marriage certificate, which is what is required to apply for sponsorship, can take a few weeks to many months, depending on the province.

2. You can apply for a visitor extension and/or apply for sponsorship with an OWP.

3. A civil ceremony is fine. Do something to celebrate after, even if it is just a dinner with some family/friends, and take pictures.

4. Credit card debt is not an issue. He needs to be able to show that you guys can support yourselves without welfare.

5. You can apply for an OWP along with the inland app. The requirements are in the guide.

6. There is no "best way". Just follow the guide and checklist and submit all required documents.

We asked about "the best way" because we know there is inland and outland apps and also according to our issues, I wanted to see if there would be any problem.

For how long can I ask the extension and what are the prices for it?

And because of the debts with the cards, we cannot do a big party but we said we will go on dinner together, also we want to celebrate it more in private in our favorite restaurant.

Thank you so much for your help! We were scared because we do not want to pass again through a distance relationship, we've had some bad times because of that.

If there are more advices or tips I'd love to read about it.

Would suggest you do more than dinner at your favourite restaurant. Doesn't have to be fancy but a gathering with friends and family where you take pictures would be much better.

Asking about the "best way" doesn't indicate inland vs. outland at all. If you want to ask about inland vs. outland, you need to actually specify that. I don't see any issues; what issues do you think you have?

How long to ask for depends on when you plan to apply for PR. Prices are on the IRCC website.

You don't need a big party but do have family/friends there with you at the ceremony and dinner and get pictures.

My fiance has known stories from his coworkers about them spending 6 years on bringing their wives even tho they have "a good job and everything okay with papers". Someone external told us and now we have doubts and feeling that the minimum detail will make us to fail and pass through an awful situation, but once we found this forum and read more from the information and read you guys made us more relax and we will proceed as how we were planning it since before.

Thank you so much on guiding us, we are really thankful with you all. It is time to prepare the wedding then :D

Hey! I have another question:

If we get marry, it will be in July and I know the marriage certificate takes 2 months to arrive.

I arrived in April and I have a returning ticket to my country in September (we bought back and fort ticket just in case) , so from April to September are 5 months, I believe 6 months is the maximum time you can stay in Canada. In case the certificate takes longer to arrive and my tourist visa expires, do I need to leave Canada or can I still apply for an extension?

Think that I won't have my marriage certificate and to extend my days in Canada I need to have a reason.

Thanks!

You can apply for an extension of your visitor status. If you do, state that you are waiting on your marriage certificate to apply for sponsorship.

So if I apply 2 weeks before my flying ticket is ok? And if I stay longer, miss my flight and apply in September for extension (knowing my 6 months end in octuber) wouldnt be any problem?

Yes, that's fine.

Yes, that's fine.

I have another question, I'm really nervous to be rejected when applying for the sponsorship.

What would be the reasons to be rejected and what can we do if we get rejected?

I mean we have my visits in Canada (3 times) and also his trip to Mexico. People say we are rushing our marriage (we have a 2 years relationship, 1 year was with me visiting during my vacations from university) and that maybe the officers will questioning that and that we will be rejected because we are just starting living together also that is questionable the fact that I finished my university in my home country while he is just having high school.

We just want to be finally together and not anymore through distance relationship.

We have pictures of us, conversations, tickets, anything that shows our relationship. Can we get rejected?

Anyone can get rejected. The general reason is "non-genuine relationship". With a 2 year relationship, you guys should be fine.
