I have an eTA approved and my partner got his TRV refused for the following reasons: travel history, family ties in Canada and in you country of residence, purpose of the trip, current employment situation and personal assets and financial status. We believe that he committed a few mistakes with the first application as lack of substantial information and wrong informations as: he stated as being single but we have a common-law relationship that can be proved because we live together, he didn't indicate his financial supporters that would be me and his dad because his current job doesn't pay well enough. Also we would visit a friend in Canada who is a permanent resident who can provide us an invitation letter. All that could be explained in a second application? Because he actually thought that the whole process of a visitor visa was simpler and committed those mistakes with the first refused application. We are very disappointed because we planned to travel with my sister and her husband that have been both approved.
