My pr confirmation has arrived but my medical expires in September. As I have to go to Canada for a visit in the summer anyhow do I need to get another medical cert?
 
Also, would I need to turn up with my wife (sponsor) and son? Or can I go alone? I was hoping to use the visit to prepare for our arrival but it would be awkward with a 3yr old in tow.

Do you mean something else.
A PR confirmation is the paper they send you when your application has been approved and completed and you are ready to arrive/land in Canada as a permanent Resident.

Once your visa or COPR has been issued, its expiry date can no longer be changed, except sometimes in circumstances where an error was made that is CIC's fault.

What this means is that you need to use the COPR by September or else apply for PR all over again.

At least, this is my understanding if no changes have been made to the rules in the last few months.

When you land (i.e., become a PR), I believe you are required by law to have the intention to begin residing in Canada immediately. So you must make plans for that. After you've landed, you have the right to change your mind and leave, so long as you satisfy the residency requirement (being in Canada for two years in every five-year period, with some exceptions). But at the time you land, you're not allowed to plan on leaving immediately. Also, if you applied in October 2012 or later (roughly, can't tell you the exact date), there is a requirement to reside with your spouse for the first two years. This requirement is generally directed at ensuring the relationship is a bona fide one, so it seems unlikely it would be applied in the case of a temporary absence.
 
October 25, 2012 is the exact date I am pretty sure.

But he is right, you need to land by sept or else your visa will be invalid and you will have to start the process all over again.
You just need to land in Canada before your medical expires, there is no need to get another medical done after you do your landing.

If you wish to leave Canada shortly after landing, you need to either wait for your PR card to come in the mail to your Canadian address (about 67 days right now) or apply for a travel document to use while you wait for PR, but obtaining a travel document is difficult and should only be used for important travel plans.
 
The expiry date for the pr is 2019 but it states that I must arrive in Canada before 13/sept/13!!
I only received this today and I will not have chance to finalise plans for my permanent stay in Canada (sell possessions, ship possessions, hand in notice at work etc...) we COULD holiday in Canada but I only have a week left of my annual holiday at work. Why would they give such a short notice? They haven't sent any paperwork out for my 3 year old son either.

It is hard to suggest or make a comment when you do not give details information. May be you think that who ever is reading your post should read your previous posts too.

Anyway, what I understand is you received PR conformation along with your family members, and the deadline to land in Canada with your family is September, 2013.

You are asking, since you needed to visit Canada in the summer that you had already planned earlier, do you need to give medical for this visit. Is that right?

Why not come to Canada with the whole family now? After you receive all of your PR cards in the mail, which usually takes 2 months, you can return to your home country and take care of the stuff needed. Your wife and child can stay in Canada or go back with you. And it is not true that once you have arrived in Canada , you are supposed to start living here by law. This is not true. In fact, you and your whole family can go back as soon as you receive the PR cards and come back after 3 years to maintain your PR status. In that case though, you will need to stay in Canada for the next 2 years without leaving to renew the PR card (there are exception to this too).
 
Forgive me for not giving the info Goodman but I honestly don't know what info to give. I received my copr paperwork this morning stating that I need to be in Canada 13/sept/2013. I have a flight to Canada on my own in August so would like to use that to officially land in Canada. However, I am unable to stay in Canada to wait until my PR card comes. I have various commitments , an employer that needs me to work my agreed notice, shipping and sales to complete.... I can stay in Canada for 7 days only!
 
Incidentally, the flight booked is for me only. Not my wife or son, although they could come I would prefer them not to, my son wouldn't like to be dragged around whilst I look for properties etc.

Did you already had a visit visa for this trip in August or you are going to use this immigrant visa to land?

If you must come and land using the immigrant visa, then you can use one of your closest, most trusted person's address where the PR card will be mailed. Then they can send it to you where you live. You do not need to have the PR card when you leave Canada. Of course, you have to decide if this is worth it. 7 days is not enough anyway to find a suitable property or place for your family when they eventually arrive.

If you don't have time to wait for the PR card, you can also apply for a "permanent resident travel document". A travel document is good for one entry into Canada. In most cases these can be issued on the same day you apply, if you appear in person at the London High Commission and have a day to wait around. At worst, it might take a day or two if you have proper documentation.

An alternative is to travel to the U.S. and cross into Canada at a land crossing. Without a PR card or travel document, you can only do this safely in private transportation (not coach/rail), because otherwise the transportation company may turn you down. For example, your wife can come pick you up in the U.S. and drive you across the border. You just need to prove to the border officer that you're a PR, which you do by showing your COPR.

There is some misinformation out there about the second option. Even CIC's website makes it look like you need a travel document. The travel document or PR card is really just so the airline/railway/bus company knows you're allowed to travel to Canada as a PR. If you manage to get to the border without it, you don't need it.
 
I don't want to avoid it because with all the expense of relocating, £1100 for a flight is n expensive luxury. Plus I would still have to land before September anyway.
We will be moving near my inlaws so I shouldn't need much time to find a suitable area near a suitable school etc. plus I was going to purchase a vehicle for when I arrive and a host of other things. I know you can't plan a life in a week but its all I can pare from work too.

Uk is visa exempt. I was going to use my copr upon arrival. It can be mailed to my wife's parents but would customs have something to say about my leaving without it?
 
I just searched the travel document, I think that covers the issue of returning, but will I have an issue leaving? Or even entering for such a short visit?
