Hi there,

I came across an article online whereby the person applying for CEC had high blood pressure and ended up having to refer to a cardiologist - which in turn ended up costing them more money.

What is the frequency of this happening and what exactly are they looking for as part of the medical? What are the failure rates for this?

Medical exam comprises of physical exam, chest X-ray, syphillis and HIV tests. There is a Section A form where you provide past medical history. Based on answers to the questions, a physician may request additional tests. e.g. if you have body piercings(other than your ears) and/or tattoos, hepatitis tests will be requested.

If that person had high blood pressure, then it would make sense they were referred to a cardiologist for a few reasons:
1. they had a high reading that day(i.e. over 120/80) or may be they are not currently taking medication
2. to rule out other risks factors e.g. heart disease.

As one lawyer told me, you have to really be in poor health to fail the medicals i.e. have a condition that may place excessive demands on the system. I don't believe high blood pressure on its own without additional risk factors or other cormobities is likely to cause a rejection.

About cost, unfortunately there is not much that can be done unless they have additional health insurance through work which can cover the costs(provincial coverage does not cover immigration tests). However, medical expenses paid out of pocket may be claimed when filing income tax.

Thanks Senorita, that clarifies a lot of things but I was wondering if the CEC have documented anything official, seeing as they seem to cover almost everything else.

By the way, I found the link which raised my original question here...

Anything official about? In anycase, that's all I know about the process.

Fair enough, I just thought the CEC would have some info online as to what know beforehand.

Thanks again for your helpful feedback though....
