Hello everyone,
I will soon be completing my PhD at an Ontario university and I am planning to apply for both the PGWP. I completed my immigration medical exam for my study permit almost five years ago, on January 7, 2021. Since it is about to expire, I wanted to check whether I am required to undergo a new medical exam for my PGWP application. I am not planning to work in fields such as healthcare or education that require medical clearance.

Thank you for your guidance

Hi! Congrats in advance on completing your PhD. For a PGWP, you generally do not need a new medical exam even if your old IME from January 2021 is expiring, as long as you don’t plan to work in occupations that require medical clearance (healthcare, child care, teaching, lab work with patients, etc.) and you haven’t lived for 6+ months in a designated high-risk country since your last medical. PGWP applications typically don’t require upfront medicals, and if you later choose to work in a restricted occupation, IRCC will simply request an updated medical before removing work conditions.
