Hi I have done MBBS and looking for other medical professionals to share their experience.

Thank you

Makes a big difference what type of doctor. Were you trained in US,some EU country, Australia, New Zealand or South Africa? Is your goal to practice or pursue another form of employment?

I am trained in Pakistan. My goal is to migrate to Canada and I am ok with changing the profession as long as it is still related to healthcare.

I am a GP.

There is a better chance of getting licensed as a GP but you’ll need to pass 2 licensing exams ten try to get a leftover residency spot. After Canadians students have matched there are not a lot of spots compared to IMGs that want them. Then you have to complete a residency again. There are a few provinces that offer a special program for GPs willing to go to underserviced areas. You have to do your licensing exams first. The programs aren’t very big and are competitive but are shorter than repeating residency for 2 years. This is an expensive process so you’ll need to arrive with enough funds if you want to take the licensing exams and go to any interviews across the country.

Many doctors do retrain as other forms of healthcare professionals. Many of the programs are hard to get into and may be only offered in some locations. The most popular tend to be the various techs (Ultrasound, radiography, etc), nursing/nurse practioners, Physician assistant ( although this is a new profession except in Manitoba and not available in many provinces. Very small program), etc. All the information is online.

Unless there is a reason you really need to immigrate to Canada I would immigrate somewhere else. Seems crazy to go back to school for 2-4 years or spend 3+ years retraining in Canada (with no guarantees that you will get the chance to retrain) if you like being a GP. It is much easier to practice in almost all countries versus Canada. Other countries are really trying to recruit physicians. Would look at the UK, NZ, Australia, US, South Africa, other European countries, etc.). There are also other countries that pay IMGs very well and will provide a very good lifestyle and savings usually around the Middle East. Sure there are private hospitals around the world that recruit IMGs for their private hospitals. Even Canadian doctors who are graduating and are specialist struggle to find jobs in Canada. Would really spend some time researching other countries.

Thanks a lot for the detailed reply. I understand your point but it is due to family reasons that I have to move to Canada. Any idea which PNP program should be most favorable for me???

You likely won’t qualify or be selected for PNP since MDs aren’t usually on the list of fields in demand in each province since most aren’t licensed to practice in Canada. You’ll have to look at each province. CRS scores being accepted for FSW are above 470 these days. Not sure what family reasons you have but many people select Canada because they think that sponsoring parents is guaranteed. The program isn’t guaranteed and the demand is currently much more than the available spots. As the Canadian population ages or if there is a change in government there could be changes to the program. There is supposed to be changes this year but the changes to who they determine qualifies hasn’t been announced yet. All the deaths in longterm care has shined an issues on some of the issues that many in healthcare knew about but it is now become a public issue.
