Hi,

I am a MSc student. I am living in canada from September 2019. My wife just arrived in canada on july 2021. she doesn’t has any work experience in canada. So instead of her, can i apply for maternity benefits as i have the working hours?

if i get the parental benefits, can i do the TA in my university? Will my benefits reduced if i work as a TA in the university?

Thanks.

Your wife needs to work at least 600 insurable hours in Canada in order to qualify for maternity benefits. If she hasn't worked at least 600 hours, then she won't qualify. Your working hours cannot be used to qualify.

To qualify for parental benefits, your income must drop by at least 40%.

Would also review your health insurance if you have health insurance through an international student policy. If she just arrived maternity care may not be covered.
