Hello,

My spouse and I are looking to get married in December. We're trying to figure everything out, get all the right forms and proof, etc... But there's one question we can't find the answer to. Are we allowed to get married anywhere in Canada, or do we have to use a registered licensing office of some sorts? Our ideal is to get married outside somewhere (call us crazy!), but are unsure of whether or not we legally can. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
Eurater

Lots of people get married outside - it's not that unusual at all. I've attended several outdoor weddings and would say it's quite a popular thing to do these days. As long as the individual who marries you is legally allowed to do so by the province - there's no issue.

Yeah, I attended two weddings in Quebec outdoors. I got married in Canada at a court house myself, but we could have done it outdoors if we wanted to. Just would have cost more.

It is so much easier to get married in Canada that in the UK.

I was married here to my british spouse outside in a garden. We got a marriage commissioner to marry us. We went to the registry office the day before and got our marriage license in about 20 minutes.

Getting married in December in Canada outside , you may be pushed trying to find someone especially if its - 25 outside. In Ontario you can get your licence in about half hour, providing you haven't been divorced in the U.K.If by any chance you have you will have to get a lawyer involved here in Canada and he has to go over your divorce papers then you have to apply. It took us 6 weeks to get this approved and 20mins after to get the licence.

If there has been no divorces, it's easy. Just submit an online application for a marriage license, print it out, take it to a civic center with 2 pieces of government photo id each which shows at least your name and date of birth. A marriage license will be issued right away. This license is valid for 3 months. You can ask the civic center to provide you with a list of registered marriage officiants who you can contact to perform your marriage. Alternatively, you can look people up online. If you are in Toronto, I found mine on torontoofficiants. com. I then checked with the government list to ensure that the person I got is really a registered officiant. (ontario.ca/government/who-can-perform-marriages). I had mine at a civic center so the fee was $200. That's the average price for a civic center wedding. Other organizations quoted me $360. Most officiants will accommodate special requests, so you can contact them in advance to see what they say.
