Hi All.

I really hope someone can give me some information here. My partner (Canadian Citizen) sponsored me under Common Law/Family Sponsorship. It was approved and I received my CoPR in May. We made plans to move to Canada at the end of September, and since then he has proposed! We would love to get married in NZ before we leave for Canada but I'm worried that this will affect my CoPR which states Common Law.

This is really stressing me out as I can't continue with wedding plans until I know if I will be able to enter Canada or not. Please help!

Thanks

If you get married before your landing you’d have to notify IRCC for sure (even though the change of your status may sound irrelevant anyway since you already got approved as common law). I don’t think that hiding this fact and landing as common law when in fact you were already married would be a good idea but that’s my opinion.

Sorry I should have also said that I see in my CoPR it states to inform them of any changes to my marital status etc, but I don't know how. I have filled out the webform I get directed to on the CIC website twice now (a month ago and last week) but have had no response. I can't find a similar thread where the PA is marrying their sponsor before landing either....

What if you just do a quick soft landing and then return back to your home country for the wedding after you already became a PR? I know the tickets may be expensive but in this case you wouldn’t have to worry about updating them and all this stuff...

Unfortunately this isn't an option. Flights would be almost $4000 per person which we simply cannot afford. It would be the easiest way I know...

Just postpone the wedding and get married after you arrive in Canada. Makes everything less complicated.

Personally, I think if you’ve done the web form then you’ve covered your bases and it should be fine but I have no idea.

If you’re really concerned maybe have a ceremonial wedding in NZ with family and friends but skip the legal part and just sign the papers once you’re in Canada.

There’s no point in submitting the webform now as your not married yet. You’d have to update them after you got married, but not before. Then they’d probably have to issue another COPR with “married” status instead of common law most likely.
