I was married 16 years ago to a US citizen. I got him all the papers to become a Canadian citizen but he never bothered to file them. So basically, he has been working in Canada for the past 16 years under the table, does not have a passport, drivers license, etc. He has been able to stay under the radar. I knowingly let this happen because he is my husband. I am in a situation now where I would like a divorce but am concerned he would become violent. If I call they police, they would arrest him and he'll be in big trouble. I believe he is wanted in the US for tax evasion. I know he wouldn't go down without trying to take me down too. What kind of consequences would I be facing as I knowingly harboured and illegal all these years. Please help, I don't know what to do. Thank you.

No consequences for you. None.

It doesn't sound like you're in a great situation right now. You should get out and seek a divorce if that's the best thing for you. Good luck. Again - no consequences for you.

Seriously nothing? Wow, I find that hard to believe. It seems too easy. Obviously I'm skeptical. I'm not saying I don't believe you, but another opinion would be nice. Should I contact a lawyer to ask the question too? Thanks.

I would have thought that he would be guilty of tax evasion in Canada as well if he has no status there. How would he be able to file? If you file for divorce, won't that put him firmly back on radar?

In that case, turn him in anonymously. Is there a confidential phone number that you could call to give the police or CBSA a tip off? "plausible deniability"

There are no repercussions for you for harboring an illegal alien. It is not a criminal thing. He will not even have criminal consequences, that is, he will not be sent to jail for living in Canada for years as an illegal. He will be deported though.

If you go to http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/protection/fraud/report.asp it gives you info on how to report to the Canadian Border Services Agency. If you go to the link, http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/security-securite/bwl-lsf-eng.html you will see they say all calls are confidential and you can call any time.
