Hi,

I have some questions about the immigration process. I am a Canadian citizen. My wife and I will sign the marriage certificate in Korea and then move back to BC, Canada early 2018. How am I able to get her covered for medical care in Canada as she will most likely get pregnant early 2018 and coverage will be necessary.

I read that if the application for PR is in the works she can apply for medical coverage and apply and be accepted to work in Canada as well. I will not be making an income at first when I am back in Canada so am I even able to sponsor her?

The whole process is a little overwhelming. Any insight would be greatly appreciated

Sincerely

If you are getting married soon, apply to sponsor her outland while you are still in Korea. With any luck, her PR visa will be approved by the time you are ready to relocate to Canada.

BC has a three month wait time for health care coverage for returning residents and for new residents. So no matter what approach you take, she won't have coverage for the first three months in BC.

Hi,

Will you have a wedding ceremony/reception as well? Note that if you just go to the government office and sign the marriage paper, IRCC may suspect a marriage of convenience done only so you can start the immigration process. They usually want to see pictures of wedding, family attending, etc. Of course this depends on how long your relationship has been to date and various other factors.

I read that if the application for PR is in the works she can apply for medical coverage and apply and be accepted to work in Canada as well.

As mentioned, you can apply for her PR while still in Korea, using OUTSIDE Canada process. This app would be processed through the Manila visa office. Not sure how long they are taking these days but I would guess sometime more than 6 months. You can wait in Korea until it's approved, then she can go to Canada and be a PR immediately. Or she can go to Canada as a visitor only while waiting for the app to process. She will not have healthcare or be able to work, until PR is approved.

Or if you come to Canada and use the INSIDE process, she can submit OWP with the app so should be able to work in approx 3-4 months later. In BC i think one is entitled to healthcare sometime after submitting the inland PR app, however i've also read this can be difficult in some cases.

If you expect to get pregnant, she can take out an insurance policy before hand that will cover pregnancy related costs. It's just important this type of policy in purchased well in advance (at least 30 days) before getting pregnant.

Yes it's fine. You can include letters of financial support from family members in Canada, and a general plan of how both of you intend to support yourselves after she gets PR status.
