Hello, I am a Malaysian and my boyfriend is a Canadian from Richmond, BC. We are planning to get marry in 2018. I have a visit visa that expires in 2020, so this allows me to stay in Canada for 6 months per entry (if i am not mistaken, it is 6 months. I am not sure where can i double confirm this information)

1. Can anyone care to explain the procedures for us to get the marriage license, certificate ? I know that we need these documents too in order for him to sponsor me a spouse visa. I have been keeping our chat records, pictures and so on as prove to the immigration.

2. Must we proceed with a ceremony in order to apply the marriage license? We have plans to get the marriage license and spouse visa done before we spend more time in planning our wedding ceremony.

3. Can my stay be extended if we are in the midst of Spouse Visa application?

4. After i get my spouse visa, when only i can apply for the PR?

5. If i have a spouse visa or PR, i still need to renew my Malaysian passport? Am i able to renew my passport in Canada or I have to travel back to Malaysia to renew them?

Thank you so much for clarifying these to me.

Hi

1. Not sure what info you are looking for. You go to the store/office/agency that issues licenses in your province and buy it. You then get married and will receive your marriage certificate some weeks/months after.

2. The marriage license doesn't mean anything. You need to actually get married.

3. There is no such thing as a "spouse visa" application. Your spouse will need to sponsor you for PR.

4. See 3.

5. Yes, you should still keep a valid passport. You will need to research your country's renewal process.
