Hi

I'm a bit stumped with the document checklist, item 14. I'm being sponsored by my husband and the checklist asks for a copy of our marriage certificate - if you have a co-signer and he/she is your spouse. I understand that I'm not the co-signer and initially my husband would not have included the marriage certificate...but...that seems to be the only place where we verify we are married in the sponsorship application. Should I include it? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

It was listed in our region specific checklist for the applicant:
6. IDENTITY AND CIVIL STATUS DOCUMENTS
Provide birth certificates, baptismal certificates or other official document confirming relationship
(including all pages of Household Registries, if applicable) for you and each of your family members
If you are married, you must include a marriage certificate. If you are now divorced ...

Thanks Ufa, but I was referring to item 14 in the checklist which is listed under supporting documents for sponsor.

You asked if the marriage certificate should be included, and if you check the applicant checklist in the region specific instructions you will see that, yes, you need to include it for a spousal sponsorship if your are married. It belongs with the applicant documents, since, from what I understand it is in this stage that they will verify the relationship between the sponsor and the applicant(s).

We were confused too, we were married in Quebec, in Quebec they gave us a marriage which is different from the marriage certificate, we assumed that the marriage license was what we had to send since its what they gave us, In December I get a letter saying that they cannot accept the document we sent. We ended up having to send for the marriage certificate which cost 35.00, we resent it and now that the main holdup with my PR application, I called Immigration and they stated that they were opening up envelopes received on the week of Nov, 26 2010, My envelope was received sometime 1st of Jan, I was told to call back end of March early april, I think that is BS that my envelope is basically sitting there waiting to be opened, Im sitting here with no job and my savings depleted and I could at least have my wp or be able to take french classes, if I would know all of this would have happened, I would have stayed in the U.S and continue to work and apply outland.

I was also married in Quebec, you have to apply for the marriage certificate after the wedding.
I was given a document that explained this to me.
As you know the forms specify marriage certificate, this is why CIC refused the marriage license.

There are thousands of items of mail arriving at CIC every day, that may account for some of the delay that you are suffering.
You have my sympathy, you are an example of why double checking everything before it is sent, is very important.

FWIW, you can take a french course online

Or you can purchase a french course

Can I ask why you chose the inland PR route?
