Hello! I'm in the process of becoming a PR of canada and had a couple of questions now that I'm married.

I know that I'll have dual citizenship and that I'll have to still file my US taxes as normal, but I'm unsure about what else changes like insurance, 401K, SSN, credit score, etc.

I appreciate any advice! And let me know what I haven't thought of. Thank you!!

You will NOT have Canadian citizenship, only permanent resident status. Canadian citizenship would be possible (if you choose) many years down the road (at least 4).

Your U.S. credit will not follow you to Canada, so you will be starting over. You will have the Canadian equivalent to your SSN (known as Social Insurance Number [SIN] in Canada).

There are major differences between a PR of Canada and a citizen of Canada:

Citizens can vote, run for public office, have a criminal conviction (and not be removed from Canada, unless they are a dual-citizen and depending on the severity of the crime could be removed).

Permanent residents...can legally live and work in Canada, but must not do something (such as criminality) that would deem them inadmissible (even though they may be in Canada).

If a PR gets a DUI (for example), there's a good chance they'll be removed.

Wow. I had no idea, thank you both!!!
