Hi there!
I'm in a bit of a complicated situation here. Would appreciate all the help I could get!
I am sponsoring my common-law partner (common-law as of September 2017) through Inland Sponsorship and I haven't updated my marital status on my CRA account. I'll be submitting our application after I receive my tax return for 2017 and include that as documentation.
Here's the problematic bit - my partner is out of status (since 2014). My partner had a work permit and tried to get PR through work but was unsuccessful (long story short - due to false promises, bad advice, people only interested in taking my partner's money, so application was never submitted). My partner just stayed after that. I tried changing my marital status online but it asks for my partner's SIN number (has one) and other tax information (partner had no income for 2017, hasn't worked for over a year now). We just want to correct this and have a life here in Canada. This may not be the most ideal route, but we still have to try and this is the only option we have at the moment.
My question is, if I change my marital status from Single to Common-law and put my partner's name on there and information, will the CRA alert immigration authorities of his status? I am worried that my partner may be deported because of that. Thanks!
