Hello,

I became a permanent resident last year and just received a Canadian grant to research and complete a project over the course of one year. The grant would pay me a full-time subsistence salary.

I am planning to be traveling around the U.S. for the majority of my one-year research period, but am worried about whether or not the time will count towards the minimum of 730 days/5 years requirement.

I assume that the Canada Council for the Arts would be an "organization or enterprise created by the laws of Canada or a province", but I am not an "employee" or exactly "under contract" with them as defined on cic.gc.ca:

"you are an employee of, or under contract to, a Canadian business or the public service of Canada or of a province or territory and
as a term of your job or contract, you are assigned on a full-time basis to:
a position outside Canada
an affiliated enterprise outside Canada or
a client of the Canadian business or the public service outside Canada; and
you will continue working for the employer in Canada after the assignment"

Does anyone have experience with a similar situation? Is it possible to call an immigration officer to see if this qualifies as "employment outside of Canada" BEFORE the end of my first five year period, so I don't accidentally lose my PR?

Thanks for any experiences you might be able to share or recommendations you might have!

Based on what you've written, it does not sound like it will count. To count, you would have to be working with a company that relocates you to a job outside of Canada.
