Hi there,

I hope you guys are doing well. I have got a quick question. I am a new immigrant and have got PR card couple of weeks ago. Now I am leaving for Qatar, working for a middle east company. Its a one year project and I will be back in next year august. I need to know that do i need to come every after six months to maintain my PR status...Please advise.

Regards,

Ahmer

No, you just have to stay 730 days (two years) in Canada in your first 5 years as a PR and any rolling 5 year period after that. There used to be a 6 month rule but it was changed in 2003.

If you didn't settle in Canada yet, you do not have a home in Canada and you are not leaving your wife and children in Canada as you work in Quatar, then you are not considered tax resident in Canada and do not have to file taxes.
