Quick question:

I have a colleague who is not a Canadian citizen or PR (Global Skills
) who moved to Canada in January with their American partner, through a land border crossing.

The visa holder is not an essential worker and hesitates to apply for any social services (health insurance, DL) even though they’re eligible to do so.

The American partner, however, still works remotely for their US employer; even if they are on a six-month max visitor visa, the visa holding partner is dropping strange hints that the American will intentionally overstay.

The whole thing seems a bit off…the couple aren’t married and haven’t been together long enough to claim common law, and since non-essential travel isn’t allowed, how did this happen?

I don't know why the visa holder is hesitant to apply for health insurance, etc. There's no issue doing so. Work permits holder have been able to move to Canada for sometime now. They don't have to be essential workers to come to Canada.

The visa holder sounds like a terrible terrible person. If you are in a relationship with someone, I'm not sure why you would be dropping hints about your partner overstaying. That's pretty passive aggressive.

CBSA may have assumed the couple was common law and allowed the American into Canada on this basis.

My opinion is: not your monkey, not your circus.
