Hi there.

My last employer let me go as she couldn't continue to pay for me and private school for the kids. My work permit expired in July 2014. I found a new employer, but they have taken time to file the LMIA and likely it will be another 3 months or so until they get that. I am still in Canada (?!?).

My question is: When my new employer prospect gets the LMIA, since I'm "out of status", will I be able to get a work permit?

What should I do now? Should I apply for a visitor visa? Do I have to leave the country? Thanks, any help is appreciated.

Yes - you have to leave the country. No - you won't be able to obtain a work permit from within Canada. You have been out of status for too long. You need to leave Canada and apply for the work permit from outside of Canada.
