Hi there,

I work at a telecom company in Edmonton as an inbound call centre technical support rep. Our department would be closing down on June. We have been offered a paid relocation to work out of our Vancouver downtown office but the pay remains the same which is 38k base and with commissions and bonuses comes out to be 40k.

I know the cost of living is higher in BC compared to here. If I decide to move into a different company/role later I understand that it's really very competitive to land jobs in BC.

Should I take the transfer or take the severance and look for a job in Edmonton. Based on what I know the job market here too isn't the best due to the oil price.

I also had an option to work out of our Calgary location temporarily till Jan 2016 but I didn't take it up because of the bad external job market there and really competition from other affected employees in our company who would all be eyeing for any internal positions - making it an uphill task to move into a different dept internally.

I have applied for the Van transfer for July but am still hesitant if I should take it up. Is that the way to go?

Please advice.

Thanks

You got your facts quite right... so this is up to you entirely.

Well... Moving to BC ensures you have employment. I believe that's important in these economic times. Considering that your line of work is not really specialized, you wouldn't want to screw your opportunities.

It may be easy to walk away buy may not be as easy to find a new job. I say go to BC and keep your eyes peeled.

Thanks for the insights.

I have accepted the transfer to work out of the Vancouver office. Wondering if you have insights how it's like living in Vancouver and how's the external job market like compared to Alberta there given the current economic situation.
