Hi, I am aware that the current laws (and political atmosphere) puts a strong requirement on people applying for citizenship in Quebec to have French Language proficiency. My girlfriend (and potentially soon to be wife) is French speaking Quebecois, living in Quebec, so I would end up applying for citizenship in Quebec if we choose to go this route. My question is whether the French language requirement applies for applicants applying based on marriage, or whether the government makes an exception in these cases (i.e. family sponsorship as opposed to people applying independently).

Thank you very much.

There is no language requirement if you are being sponosored by your spouse / common law partner.

FYI - She would be sponsoring you for permanent residency - not citizenship. You have to become a PR before you can become a citizen.

Thank you. And then, as a a permanent resident, am I able to ultimately apply for citizenship without French proficiency?
