Hey everyone,

So this weekend, we are driving down to Maine from Nova Scotia to activate my PR via St Stephens 3rd Bridge in NB.

I wondered what the process was with landing. Is it just a case of going into the US, turning around and coming back into Canada? Do i just need to bring my passport and COPR documents or are there other documents I need? I dont think I need a B4 form or anything because Im not bringing anything in to Canada.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Passport and CoPR. They will ask for your address to mail the PR card to so it can help to have it on a slip of paper to hand over. Also, B4 if you are going to import anything now or in the future (that you already own, use, and possess). Even if you have items - especially valuables - you've already brought into Canada you may want to declare them on a B4. For example, if you have a wedding band or engagement ring you want to declare it so you have proof that you've imported it into Canada for future reference should you need it if any questions come up in future crossings.

Also, a charged camera ;)

Could you (or someone) please clarify something for me? I tried to find where I read this, but

  • is it true that after I receive/land with PR the first time, I do not have to move all my personal goods with me right away...? And that I have some amount of time to go back home and pack up the rest of my personal goods to bring over without paying import fee/tax?
  • How long do I have?
  • And do I have to have all the items I am EVER going to declare as personal goods declared on a B4 during my initial/first landing?
I'll be moving from west coast USA to east coast Canada, so it's going to take more than a simple day trip.

So, for example, say I get PR in 1 Jan 2016 (I hope soon, but just for hypotheticals), and then I land one week later 7 Jan 2016 with half of my belongings. Do I need paperwork (B4) for 100% of the items that I am ever going to bring/declare or can that first B4 be for just the first 50% and I can bring another B4 with the 2nd half of my belongings later?

CBSA gives you one opportunity to declare everything you own, use, and possess that you want to bring in to Canada. Essentially you give them a list that says this is all the things that I own and have used and possessed that I wish to import. They stamp it to acknowledge you turned in the list and they accepted it and give you a receipt that you've paid duty and tax for all those goods (at a 0% duty and tax rate). You can then physically bring those goods into Canada whenever is convenient in the future. They won't be taxed or subject to duty in that future trip because you already declared them and paid duties and taxes on them (albeit at the 0% rate); you just need to show your B4.

That means that:

  • Yes

No, there is no set amount of time

There is no time limit for you to bring in the goods you declared on your B4/B4A and that CBSA stamped.

Yes. Well, only goods that you have owned, used, and possessed are eligible.

You would put put 100% of the items that you are ever going to bring in as a settler on your B4 on 7 Jan 2016 (assuming you are planning to live at least 12 months in Canada as of 7 Jan 2016).

OhCanadiana, thanks so much!
