I wonder about this, too. I plan on settling on AB as well, so I'm interested in knowing what kind of identification I should be carrying since I don't drive (have never been issued a driver's licence).
......
I also used to have health insurance and a doctor, but I'm assuming I'll have to do the process again since now I'll be a PR instead of the temporary resident.
PR Card is also acceptable ID for most cases, personally all the cases I've encountered I'm aware of. Since I have not received my PR Card, I couldn't get real driver's license when I renewed. When I know I would need photo ID, I still carry passport, which is not very convenient, and other cases, cases nothing serious, they accept my student ID :).

Finding a family doctor is a pain in the neck. I still haven't found one. I used to have one at school but was told to find new one since I graduated. I've called quite a few nearby from the other list and none of them are accepting new patients. I looked at the list none available nearby. I'm not used to this "family doctor" system and feel awkward to find one 20km away from us. When I get very sick, I would not want to travel that far.... (When I was in the US, I got sick and none was taking new patients. I was only able to get an appointment 6 weeks into the future. Eventually my sickness developed to bronchitis and chipped a rib bone!)

Ouch! That sounds bad.
It took me a while as well to find a family doctor during the year I was in Canada... I'm secretly hoping that somehow, my doctor is going to keep seeing me just by updating my insurance number ::)
