Hi all,

I got a "certified translation" of my Korean marriage certificate (a professional company translated it and signed to certify that the translation was accurate). I believe that this is all that is required. However, I sent this in with my application, and now the Seoul visa office is saying that I need to provide them with additional documents. Specifically, they are asking for our marriage certificate again. Am I missing something? Is there further notarization/authentication/stamping that needs to be done to make a Korean marriage certificate acceptable for Canadian Immigration?

Did you send a copy of the Korean version of the marriage certificate with the translation? If you just sent the translation, they will want the Korean version as well.

Yes, I did send the Korean version as well.

I received clarification from the Seoul Visa Office today. They said that I need to provide proof that my marriage has been registered in either Canada or the USA (my wife is Canadian and I am American).

However, according to all my research, THERE IS NO WAY TO REGISTER A FOREIGN MARRIAGE IN EITHER CANADA OR THE USA! Both countries fully recognize the Korean document as proof that I am married.

Anybody have any idea what I do?? I think the visa office is very much wrong about this. But they are insistent.

Did this ever get resolved? I will likely have same issue

Go to the "Sponsoring my Korean wife" thread and ask this question. When we got married, we registered our marriage through our local gu office in Seoul, got the marriage certificate, had it translated into English and sent the English version and the original Korean one with our application. I don't think you'll have a problem, but if you have questions, I suggest posting them in the Korean thread I mentioned, as there are quite a few people (mostly expat men) sponsoring their Korean spouses (mostly Korean women) and they have lots of great information.

Here's a link to the thread: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/sponsoring-my-korean-wife-for-permanent-residency-t137874.0.html

The OP's situation was a little different because neither party to the marriage was a Korean. Hence, I don't know that they would have to register the marriage at the gu office as neither party would be on the family register there. Don't know how you go about registering that kind of marriage with the Canadian embassy. You may want to email the Canadian embassy in Seoul and ask them. Unlike Manila, I always found that office to be quite responsive to inquiries.

I should have read this a little closer!
