Hello,

Thank you for opening this link. If you are an expert, this one is for you!

The situation: I need a multiple entry visa to attend a family wedding in Mexico after my current multiple entry visa expires so I can return to Canada.

- January 30, 2012: Moved to Toronto, ON from Santiago, Chile with a 1 year work permit that included a TRV with multiple entry. The work permit is valid from January 31, 2012 until January 30, 2013 (today!).

- January 2, 2013: Applied for IMM5708 (Application to Change Conditions, Extend My Stay, or Remain in Canada as a Visitor or Temporary Resident Permit Holder). This was done so that I can stay in Canada for 6 months as a visitor (depending on when the decision is granted this may be early April through early September). While the application is processing I have Implied Status which is equivalent to a Visitor status.

Assuming the extension to remain as a Visitor (IMM5708) is granted and I can stay in Canada, I would like to travel to Mexico on April 27, 2013 for a family wedding, and will require a multiple entry visa (to reenter Canada).

I am aware that the IMM5257 Application for Temporary Resident Visa is the way to obtain a TVR with Multiple Entry.

However, I am confounded as to whether or not I should apply for the TVR immediately because today is my last day as a worker in Canada. I believe I need my current status (worker) in order to apply for the TVR. Tomorrow I will have lost status as a worker and will have "Implied Status."

The processing time for IMM5257 is quite short, maybe 14 days or so. The processing time for IMM5708 is substantially longer (the decision will not be granted until first week or April).

Question:

Do I apply for the TVR now, and if so will it affect my pending IMM5708 (change of status) application?

Or, do I wait until the first week of April to receive the decision on the IMM5708 application, and apply for IMM5257 hoping the decision will come before I board the flight to Mexico on April 27, 2013?

Or, will neither of these work? Must I have worker status for the duration of the TRV (IMM5257) application process?

Is it advisable to add a supplemental document to my pending IMM5708 application that explains my need for a multiple entry visa? Will it be considered?

Another possibility is that the visa issued will be multiple entry? Is this likely given that the first TRV was multiple entry?

Tough one, huh? Maybe not? Share your thoughts please, and thank you for taking the time to read this. I really appreciate it.

Best regards,
Pellegrino

Hi Pellegrino,

I am not sure if your problem was solved. I am having a similar issue. MY TRV has been expired, to extend it do I have to fill IMM5708 or IMM5257E ?
If you read this, please answer me. Your help will be appreciated.

Thank you.

To apply for TRGV you will need valid permit to show your stay in Canada. So Pellegrino you wont be able to apply for TRV until your receive valid visitor/work permit (in April).
