Hi everyone!

I was going over the application and have a few questions:

1. So my personal timeline goes like this:

-Sept 2013 moved from US to CAN on a student working holiday visa
-That visa expired in Aug 2014, upon which I switched to visitor visa. That document is valid from Sept 5 2014- Feb 1 2015
-Applied for visitor visa again upon that expiry, it took a couple months to be granted where I was implied status. Next visitor visa document is valid April 1 to sometime Feb 2016 (they gave me longer than 6 months because I had a common law sponsorship PR app in progress at that point). HOWEVER I was granted PR on Oct 5 2015, so I never had to use that visitor visa to its full length.

So that being said. When using the residence calculator, am I including my implied status (around 2 months while I waited for the 2nd visitor visa), or just list two separate visitor periods with the dates valid on the documents? (I have enough time present that it doesn't affect me; I'm over the 1095 day limit regardless, I am just asking for purposes of keeping my application accurate)

2. I filed taxes every year I've been in Canada. I have no idea if I was "required" to or not though, do I just check "yes" for that on the application?

3. I'm not sure when I'm going to send in the app just yet, but let's just say my eligibility period is from Nov 2012 to Nov 2017. Considering I didn't even move to Canada until 2013, do I still need to declare the 2012-2013 period as an "absence" from Canada on the residency calculator?

4. I saw that day trips must be declared.... I live in the GTA (so close to the US border) and have crossed many times for just a few-hours shopping day trip. I also crossed 3 different times dealing with the car import process! I have no record of all these random days I crossed and am stressed about figuring out how I'm supposed to accurately declare that. Any advice?

5. For my list of being employed, unemployed, etc, who do you recommend I put for contacts? Coworkers? Fellow students? What about when I was unemployed? My common law partner? Some are jobs I worked at for only a couple months and am not in contact with anyone from there anymore. I can give the store phone number but one for example is a really small business and there's no email unless I go back and ask the owner for his personal one. Do these small details matter much?

6. It asks if I ever lived outside Canada in my eligibility period. Again, one year of my eligibility period (2012) is before I even moved to Canada, so I guess I would say yes to that. But then it asks me to fill out the residency form. I looked at that and it only seems like it's for Crown servants or something weird like that and does not apply to me at all... So I have no idea what I am supposed to do for that...?

7. I only have ever used my birth name. I can leave the section for other names blank (section 6)?

8. Any other tips you have for me? I definitely plan to hang around this forum for a while before I rush and send off the app, but it seems mostly straightforward... at least much, much more than the PR app was!

Thank you so much for any help!!! Good luck to everyone with apps in progress!

Hi there - suggest as a starting point you refer to the government website

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizenship/become-eligibility.asp

You'll also want to begin confirming all your absences and time within the country pre and post-PR

https://eservices.cic.gc.ca/rescalc/resCalcStartNew.do

Short answers to your questions

1 - Include all your status on your application, including implied, this is temporary just like a visa or a work permit.

2 - The CRA site confirms whether you needed to fill out an income tax return, it usually relates to time in Canada and money earnt that calendar year https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-ag...t-your-tax-return/you-have-file-a-return.html

3 - Yes, the eligible period.

4- The government wants to be aware of any trips outside the country. If you don't have a log, then you will have to review your personal records, this may help: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/

5 - HR contacts work best. If you are unemployed, there is no contact because there is nothing to confirm

6 - I'm not sure what you mean, if you lived outside for a year then you will likely have to provide a police certificate, follow the instructions

7 - Add your birth name

8 - Follow the instructions

Good luck

orum for a while before I rush and send off the app, but it seems mostly straightforward... at least much, much more than the PR app was!

Before you apply, you can also request the entry records into Canada from CBSA.
http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/agency-agence/reports-rapports/pia-efvp/atip-aiprp/req-dem-info-eng.html

For full disclosure, the instructions warn against doing so while the application is in process.
