Hello! I can't seem to find a straightforward answer to this question anywhere.

If I, a U.S. citizen, am only allowed to visit my finance, a Canadian citizen, in Canada for 6 months at a time, how
can we legally live together a year before applying for sponsorship?

Hope someone can help! Thank you.

1. You can apply for an extension or he could live in the US for 6 months.

Thank you for your quick response!

So does that mean I will need to apply for a Temporary Resident Visa?

If you are admitted to Canada for 6 months as a visitor, about 30 days prior to the 6 months expiring, you apply for an extension to Vegreville. See: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/extend-stay.asp
