Just a quick question. Will it make much a difference for common law if we are tenant/occupant on the lease instead of co-tenants? Our landlord doesn't seem willing to add myself as a tenant since I am a student and have no income. Will this really affect our application? Thanks!

Yes, it "really" will. You still need to prove that you have been living together.

On it's own it wont make any difference. There is no one single piece of proof that you "must" have to prove common-law, but all your proofs put together must make a strong case.

In my situation, my spouse was never on any lease or rental agreement at all, since the mortgage was already in my name only. So we relied on other proofs to prove common-law.

Before we moved in our condo (we bought it together) my boyfriend and I lived together in a basement suite. My boyfriend was the only tenant mentioned in the rental agreement because he moved in before he met me and our landlord didn't change the agreement afterwards. But he wrote a letter for our application explaining the situation that my boyfriend rented the place but he confirms that I moved in on April 20th, 2012...

Maybe your landlord can do this for you

My husband and I moved to Halifax together but due to financial reasons (my credit score is terrible) he only put his name on the lease and my name went on the agreement as an occupant. To prove that I am living in the apartment as well, I photocopied mail addressed to the apartment with my name on it and provided a few pay checks from work with the building address on it. We also provided the number of our leasing office if they needed to speak with someone to verify my residency.

Found this old thread so may not get a response but was wondering how you got on with this if it was accepted by CIC?
