Hi,

I am PR in Canada since one and half year, I came here as a Sponsored Family Class under Common-Law (with my Canadian Partner), now we will marry in about a month and I was wondering if I need to apply for a new PR card because of the change in Marital Status or if I need to notify CIC. I can't find any information about this situation on the CIC website. Thanks for you help. VV

no, you don't need to apply for a new pr card as your marital status is not listed on the card. you also do not need to notify cic of your marital status change. when you go to renew your pr card in so many years, you may need to update your status on that point, depending on what the application asks you.

I was wondering as I will communicate the Italian State the change in Marital Status and obviously it will be registered trough Vital Statistics Canada and CRA (for Tax Purposes). I do not have to change my passport till when it is due renewal in 2021 (it does not have marital status on it), but i was wondering about the PR card as the website says to communicate to CIC changes in marital status but it does not specify if it is only during application or after you have your PR status as well..

the way i understand it, you need to notify CIC of changes before landing. Or if the relationship has broken down, then the sponsor can report the change in status. i have not heard of the need to contact CIC after landing otherwise. Changing you marital status with the CRA has nothing to do with CIC.

I just wanted to make sure to follow procedure as bureaucracy is very different in Canada from Italy (where any little detail can cause years of trouble). If you have to renew the passport (in case it is lost or stolen)and the passport number changes do you have to re-apply for PR Card?

Sorry for the many questions. It's hard to find all the answers on the CIC website. Thanks a lot for your time and help.

No, you don't need a new PR card if you lose your passport.

The only reasons you would need a new card is if your card is expiring, lost, stolen or you are legally changing your name or gender.

Well the record of landing is required to apply for a replacement PR Card, for the Citizenship Test and it is connected with the passport you used for landing, so I was wondering if it can cause problems if the passport number on the ROL and the one on the passport you present for PR Card renewal are different.

Thanks for your patience.
