My current passport expires in 2020, and I used this passport to apply for a study permit and coop permit; both have been approved.

My program in Canada starts in June 2019 and ends in 2021. But since my passport expires in the middle of the program, my permits are only valid until my passport expiration date.

Another issue is that it was too early to renew my passport since I had more than one year left on it. The earliest time I can renew it is a couple days after my program starts.

I know that before my passport expires, I need to get a new passport and then apply for the same study and coop permits once again, since my correspondence letter states "If you obtain a new passport before your visa expires, you will need to apply for a new visa"

I am wondering if there is any chance that my permit applications will somehow get denied the second time although I am applying for the same program again? I would hate to have problems with my Visa in the midst of my program.

Once you get the new passport, you then have to apply for a study permit extension. This is easy to get compared to the study permit. The visa officer will understand why you are applying for the extension by seeing your passport. Rest assured there should not be any issues as this is a regular occurrence.

I don't know who gave you that correspondance letter but they are wrong. A visa is absolutely valid on an old passport. I have travelled countless times when my residency visa was on my old passport. We used to staple them together.

To be on the safer side you should get your passport at your local embassy in Canada and then apply for a study permit extension. You will now have a study permit valid till your program end.

Hi, thank you again for your help.
I applied for my permits online through the CIC website and the correspondence letters state the following:

"Your passport or U.S. travel identification must be valid, and must be valid beyond the period you intend to remain in Canada. If it is not, the validity of your study or work permit will likely be limited to correspond to the validity date of your passport or U.S. travel identification."

and "You must seek entry to Canada to obtain your study permit by 2020/05/25 (yyyy/mm/dd). Your passport must be valid beyond the period you intend to remain in Canada. If not, the validity of your study permit will not be issued beyond the expiry date of your passport, or, for United States citizens and permanent residents, the validity date of your identity document."

Do you think with what I have been told, I can apply for my new passport then apply for the study permit+ coop permit extensions under my new passport? Is there a way to apply for this extension online through the CIC website, or is it done somewhere else?

Thank you!

ps: i think you are right. The very first quote I included in my original post was referring to the temporary resident Visa, which I am exempt from since i have a eTA

Yes, what this is telling you is that you need to enter Canada and get your study permit before your passport expires.

You can file for a study permit extension online the same.way you apply for a study permit. It is on the same site.

I believe you said you were japanese. So once you enter Canada in June 2019 and get your study permit and once your settled you can then get your passport renewed when your elegible to do so.

After that just file for a study permit extension and You will get it extended on the new passport. If your eTA is not extended with the extension you will have to apply for a eTA seperately for an additional cost.

Also see your school advisors about doing extension you will need new enrolment letter and a letter for co-op.

So should the updated enrolment letter and coop approvals from the school be the exact same as my first one except with my updated passport number?
