Is work permit which has not expired still valid even after the person got PR?

Hi Everyone,

Just want to know... Is the work permit (Temporary Resident Visa on the passport) which has not expired still valid even after the person got his PR card?

The reason for asking this is because the company is asking the passport of the employee for getting the work permit cancelled even after knowing that the person is already a PR card holder.

Passport is not required to cancel the work permit. your company need to notify CIC to cancel the work permit and thats it. why they are asking for passport seems fishy....

A company cannot "cancel" a work permit, and in any case, there is absolutely no need, as the PR visa replaces any work permit/TRV.

A TRV is not a work permit, tho. It is a travel document (also no longer needed).

The company wants to cancel the TRV issued on passport of the employee. The reason for doing this is that this employee has resigned the company. The money for the TRV on the employee's passport was paid by the company. The employee has already conveyed to the company that he is a Canadian PR card holder. Is the company (employer) correct in asking the passport of the employee to cancel the TRV? Is the TRV still valid even after the employee becoming a Canadian Permanent Resident?

The company can contact CIC without the employee's passport, if they want to try. There is absolutely no valid reason for a former employer to ask for the passport.

The individual is no longer a temporary resident, so the TRV has absolutely no value. I don't know if CIC actually cancels the TRV once you become a PR, but you don't need it/can't use it (you have to travel using your PR card now) and no one else can use it, so...
