Agreed this is old information. It's not recent.

In my opinion they are still months away from processing applications normally since I believe all / most staff are work from home right now and this is likely creating significant challenges in completing application processing at a regular pace. While Canadian provinces are slowly are re-opening (as well as places around the world), I expect no Canadian government office is sending all of their staff back to work at government office locations. They are either not sending staff back at all - or sending only a very small number of critical staff back. Based on experiences in my area of business, I think things will stay this way until at least the end of summer.

In my opinion the delays will continue into early fall. I also think IRCC (and other government agencies) are working to change their processes and systems to make work from home more effective.

This news is reprint from a month ago.
Not a beacon of hope.

I'm still secretly hoping that once normal work resumes they just quickly "mass approve" applications to move them through the system faster so they don't have as much of a backlog ;) ;)

I wouldn't get your hopes up too much for that. Some of the requirements like criminality and security are, I believe, statutory. There are certainly some things they could do - reducing the level of approvals needed internally, for example - but it's not so simple as waving a wand.

Personally I think the best hope in the short run is that they hire a bunch of people temporarily to reduce the backlog of eg new files for data entry, scanning and initial review. But even there, there are limits like security clearances and physical space and systems and training.

Given the money that has been spent on the pandemic extra hiring by various government agencies isn’t likely. Case officers must be trained so training people for temporary position makes no sense and government hiring is not quick. Would add that if you include training times applications that are currently being processed aren’t likely to be processed more quickly.

My cousins work for CRA and most are going back by the third week of June! Which gives me hope that IRCC will staff up and start processing our files soon :)

That is a good news, I hope the same goes for IRCC and we start seeing some updates.
