Is return ticket mandatory for visitors

I'm about to book flight tickets for my family and they are Indian citizens in visitor visa. I wasn't sure if return ticket is mandatory for visitors.
Can someone please let me know if this is required

With few exception, yes it’s a requirement. Without an onward destination, they may be refused boarding at the airport (personal experience). Note that onward travel doesn’t necessarily mean they have to return to india, just leave Canada.
