Hi,

I just started looking into different ways of moving to Canada. I moved to the United Kingdom when I was 11 from another European country and I was looking for some information regarding UK citizens moving to Canada. Would it be advantageous for me in any way to be recognized as a UK citizen when applying to move to Canada or does it not matter? The cost would be roughly £1000 to get an English passport so not the cheapest of ways. At first I thought that my grandads brother who has been living in Canada for over 30 years will be able to sponsor me, but then I read that it's only a parent or a grandparent that can do so. Is that correct?

Thank you!

UK citizenship doesn't really provide any advantage any more. Depending on your age at the time of application, your parents could sponsor you as a dependent if the were PR's or citizens, or in the process of applying for permanent residence.

How old are you?

Only a parent (not grandparent and not any other family member) can sponsor their own child, but only if that child is aged 21 and under.

If you are aged 22 or over, then nobody except a Canadian spouse (if you got married or common-law with a Canadian) would be able to sponsor you.

If you had necessary education/skilled work experience and wanted to apply for PR through an economic immigration stream, then it's irrelevant what citizenship you hold. UK citizens have absolutely no advantage at all for any part of Canadian immigration.

Only thing UK citizenship may help with is to come to Canada temporarily on an IEC/working holiday visa.
